friend: "how could you possibly epitaph someone you don't know"
Islam: " I was told he was a good man, someone worth praying for."
friend: " how could you be so sure he's a good man. You never know, even with you closest friends"
Islam: " You don't think good people do bad things?"
Friend:" No, good people always do good no matter what the situation is."
Islam:" so If I ,for example, stole, would you consider me evil?"
Friend: " No, I won't be sure. I wouldn't know if it was your first time or the tenth time you stole."
Islam:" okay, so what if I have kleptomania?"
Friend:"Then I guess it means you have a problem, but you're good inside."
Islam: "I believe everyone's good, but they kind of lost their way."
Friend:"No, on the contrary, we're all born wild (that was his exact word)."
Islam: " it depends on your perspective, you might see us all as bad or all as good.eitherway, we all belong to the same category. and therefore we can not judge people as good or evil.
Friend:" but you said your friend was a good person"
Islam:"I said good people are worth praying for, and I still mean it. everyone is worth praying for, because everyone is good inside, no matter what bad things they do."
Friend: "I still don't agree with you."
This was me trying out the Socratic method in an argument. I've just read about in the book : "the consolation of philosophy" and decided to put it into application. And even though it might seem as a complete failure because we he didn't agree with me in the end, I still think it was a success. Because not always does a good argue lead to a "win", but rather leads to an elaborative examination of one's views. A good argument leaves you skeptic of what you once considered a fact.
"The consolation of philosophy" -Author: Allain De Button, one of the most enjoyable books I've ever read. I recommend it for everyone.
